The novella “Viy” was written nearly 200 years ago. It takes its name from a demonic creature in East Slavic mythology—a demon with large, drooping eyelids that have hung down to the ground for centuries, preventing him from opening his eyes on his own. Whoever Viy looks at faces instant death. This is well known to the story’s protagonist, Khoma Brut, a student at the Kyiv Seminary, who was sent to recite prayers over the body of a deceased young noblewoman—a witch—for three nights in a row. But the carefree seminarian, who loves a drink and a good meal, is no match for the demon and the evil spirits serving him. Overcome with terror, he perishes. But is it only from fear? It is up to every audience member who comes to see the production of “Viy, or Gogol’s Terrible Secret” to answer that question.
This horror-style play is a new stage adaptation of the legendary novella, which, thanks to its profound meaning, has not lost its relevance even today. It’s no easy task to scare a modern audience. But the impressive production, the eerie stage sets, and the actors’ heartfelt performances will leave no one in the audience unmoved.
